Fraunhofer technologies support businesses from content creation all the way to its delivery.
This year’s NAB is about creating experiences and bringing them to people. So what better place for us to be? In just a few short weeks, we’ll be showcasing our contributions to capturing audiences all over the world. Representing the world’s leading applied science organization, three Fraunhofer Institutes joined forces to present all aspects of our research and technologies for the broadcast industry at booth W2857: Fraunhofer FOKUS, Fraunhofer HHI, and Fraunhofer IIS.
Audio, Video, and Streaming technologies that redefine industry standards
Fraunhofer FOKUS is driving research in digital transformation, including communication systems and Internet-delivered video. At NAB, the institute presents its latest innovation in advanced streaming technologies including FAMIUM streaming analytics and live QoE, sustainable and green video streaming solutions, and comprehensive and versatile testbeds for adaptive bitrate streaming testing for HLS and MPEG DASH as well as emerging 5G and Metaverse experiences. Find out more.
Fraunhofer HHI is a world leader in the development of mobile and optical communication networks and systems as well as the processing and coding of video signals. The renowned contributor to three generations of video coding standards, including their major enhancement extensions and their related transport and storage formats, presents their latest generation: H.266/Versatile Video Coding (VVC). As a particular highlight, the video coding experts will show how video with film grain can indeed be efficiently compressed with VVenC, their open and optimized encoder implementation of the most recent VVC standard. To round off the industry-spanning contribution, Fraunhofer IIS will showcase technologies shaping the globally deployed standards and technologies in the fields of audio and moving picture production. The creator of mp3 and co-creator of the Digital Cinema Initiative test plan is bringing the most advanced audio codecs of the industry as well as professional tools for digital film and media production.
The latter is represented by JPEG XS, the codec with temporal differential coding for Video over IP. It delivers visually lossless quality at ultra-low-latency and supports multiple platforms. With easyDCP, creation, validation, and playback of DCPs has just become even more easy. The flexible toolchain now includes AI-enhanced localization tools that facilitate quality control and editing of subtitles in the cloud.
When it comes to audio codecs, xHE-AAC focuses on applications on the go, like interruption-free streaming. It delivers DASH/HLS streaming from 12 to more than 320 kbit/s for stereo, mandatory loudness and dynamic range control as well as improved speech quality and stereo imaging. The MPEG-H Audio system delivers immersive sound experiences and excels through advanced customization options such as seamless ad-insertion and multi-stream capabilities. It is included in the ATSC 3.0, DVB, TTA, and SBTVD standards. In Brazil, it is already used for regular ISBD-T broadcast and has been selected as the mandatory audio system for the next-generation TV 3.0 broadcast service.
