Following the successful TV 3.0 proof of concept during the 2022 football tournament in Qatar, Globo, the largest media company in Latin America, is taking the next step towards the introduction of TV 3.0, Brazil’s next-generation broadcast system, which is currently being developed by the SBTVD Forum.
Globo combines the world’s leading broadcast and transmission technologies that make up TV 3.0 in a showcase promoted during a sports event in Paris. They include MPEG-H Audio immersive and interactive sound, VVC video for 8K/4K resolution, High Dynamic Range (HDR) images, and video enhancements with LCEVC from V-Nova. TV 3.0 is expected to enter commercial operation in 2025. To advance this launch, Globo has equipped one of its venues in Rio de Janeiro with a dedicated broadcast setup for the showcase during the event.
One of the main highlights of Globo’s TV 3.0 showcase are the consumer devices used to receive the live stream. TV sets from Hisense, LG, and Samsung as well as set-top-boxes from Shenzhen Jiuzhou Electric and Tolka TV, amongst others, enable viewers to personalize the sound through an integrated MPEG-H Audio user interface. The experience is enhanced even more by MPEG-H Audio HDMI passthrough enabling reproduction of immersive sound with AVRs and soundbars supporting MPEG-H Audio provided by Denon/Marantz and Sennheiser.
This project was made possible through the cooperation of Globo and its partners, including Fraunhofer IIS and leading consumer electronics manufacturers. Thanks to the support of ETRI, Globo is able to conduct the first ATSC 3.0 over the air transmission in Brazil, which already follows the SBTVD Forum’s recent recommendation to adopt ATSC 3.0 transmission technology for the TV 3.0 standard in Brazil.
“This project exemplifies the power of a joint effort of technology providers, broadcasters, and consumer electronics manufacturers. Working closely with our partners has enabled us to push the boundaries of next-generation broadcast technology and we are excited to deliver an unparalleled TV 3.0 showcase,” said Mauricio Felix, Technology Director at Globo.
To enhance the immersive 5.1+4H feed received from Paris with advanced audio interactivity and personalization options at Globo’s broadcast center in Rio de Janeiro, MPEG-H Authoring and Monitoring Units by Jünger Audio, Linear Acoustic, Salsa Sound, and New Audio Technology are used. Through the authoring of additional metadata during live production, viewers can be provided with a new experience that allows them, for example, to select a different commentator. The audio and video signals are then streamed live with encoders provided by MainConcept, Ateme, and Spin-Digital. A wide range of consumer devices from leading TV set manufacturers and home theater providers are installed to create an unmatched showcase at the Globo venue in Rio de Janeiro.
“We are thrilled to be part of this TV 3.0 showcase. Globo’s initiative marks a significant milestone in Brazil’s journey to revolutionize the broadcasting landscape with the rollout of the TV 3.0 system,” said Marc Gayer, Head of the Business Department and Deputy Division Director Audio and Media Technologies at Fraunhofer IIS.
The Globo demonstrations will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
