Shaping the future of digital communication at MWC 2025

From satellite calls with lowest bitrates to immersive communication for multi-party conferencing – Fraunhofer technologies are shaping the future. The Mobile World Congress is right around the corner and Fraunhofer IIS will be there to showcase latest technologies for tomorrow’s communication ecosystems. The show will take place in Barcelona, from March 3 to 6, attracting leading companies, experts, and tech enthusiasts from all over the world. All of them are welcome to experience our range of technologies at booth CS64 and to have a chat with our experts.

D2D Voice & Video Calls over GEO and LEO Satellites at Scale

Fraunhofer has applied advanced AI-based technology to a new generation of speech codecs to significantly reduce the bitrates currently required for good audio quality. Satellite & mobile operators using GEO satellite constellations may, for the first time, begin to offer reliable D2D voice services today with audio quality as good or better than terrestrial calls. Even satellite operators using LEO constellations can benefit from this paradigm shift by deploying satellite voice services at scale and cost efficiently.

In addition, discover the industry-first preview of Fraunhofer’s latest AI-based video codec that will allow for D2D video calls over Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) in future.

Immersive 3GPP Voice and Audio Communication with IVAS

IVAS is the cutting-edge 3GPP voice codec that redefines communication and telephony through immersive audio experiences. It improves call quality and provides more realistic ad-hoc and multi-party conferencing, which can improve focus and reduce fatigue during calls and virtual meetings.

At MWC you will experience the codec, which is the ideal choice for the future of mobile immersive audio. As it was designed specifically for mobile communication, IVAS is optimized for highly efficient compression with low complexity and minimal delay.

The Fraunhofer upHear Range

The upHear Microphone Processing technologies make the IVAS exhibit stand out even more! The Directional Voice Isolation feature captures multiple speech sources separately. This makes it possible to manipulate the perceived position of individual voices during a call, change their volume, and even mute them entirely. The result can be experienced in a real phone call at MWC.

LC3/LC3plus: High-quality Audio for the Entire Communication Ecosystem

LC3/LC3plus  addresses the drawbacks of today’s wireless communication platforms. Its extremely low delay makes it ideal for high-end gaming headsets and audio systems and the improved robustness ensures interruption-free phone calls.

At MWC, we will showcase LC3plus Lossless, which ensures a consistently great user experience by switching seamlessly between lossless and lossy modes of operation. We will also present the latest implementations into CE devices such as the AKG N5 Hybrid earbuds and the Sony ECM-S1 streaming microphone.

xHE-AAC is the latest generation of the renowned AAC codec line and already used in Netflix, Facebook stories, and Instagram Reels. The technology is natively supported in iOS, Android, Fire OS, and Windows. It provides DASH/HLS streaming at 12-320+ kbit/s, mandatory loudness and dynamic range control, and improved speech quality as well as stereo imaging. The new anchor loudness feature focuses on speech-gated loudness measurement. It normalizes loudness based on speech segments to ensure a consistent audio experience without volume fluctuations.

MPEG-H Audio is a comprehensive Next Generation Audio (NGA) system with advanced personalization and accessibility options. It enables the creation and delivery of personalized immersive audio, which ensures accessibility through dialogue enhancement and audio description options. The playback is automatically optimized for the individual scenario and there are tools and solutions for the entire broadcast chain.

6G-capable Network-Energy-Savings-Simulator

Besides audio and video topics, experts from the Communications Systems division will present the 5G Advanced Network-Energy-Savings-Simulator which gives an insight into innovative approaches to lowering the energy consumption of base stations. This is a particularly relevant contribution today, as energy costs for the operation of mobile networks are increasing and the reduction of CO2-emissions is of utmost global importance.

No matter which of our topics is of interest to you, we look forward to meeting you in Barcelona.  Schedule a meeting with one of our experts or just stop by our booth CS64. For more information visit Fraunhofer.de.
